Basics of Dementia
Understanding the Basics of Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that impairs memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia contributing to 60-70% of cases. Alzheimers is a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life.
The primary risk factor for Alzheimer's is increasing age, with the majority of people being diagnosed after age 65. While the exact cause is still not fully understood, researchers believe a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors play a role in the development of the disease.
Common symptoms of Alzheimer's include memory loss, confusion, difficulty with communication, mood swings, and challenges in completing familiar tasks. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience significant changes in their abilities and behavior.
While there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, early diagnosis can help individuals and their families slow down and sometimes reduce the symptoms. Dr. Dale Bredesen is the leader in identifying causes of memory loss and providing ideas for helping treat dementias. Planning early for the future and agreeing on your approach together is important.
Families who educate themselves early, prepare a plan, and share open communication and compassion with each other will better embrace their loved one and each other in a way that gives peace and connection for all family members.
